FHC Book Development Grant
FHC Book Development Grant
FHC Book Development Grants support the publication of scholarly books that present original research or book-length creative content. This grant is available for edited collections, co-authored works, and monographs. Funding will be based on merit and need. Examples of eligible expenses include costs associated with indexing, obtaining digital images, compensating qualified readers, securing copyright permissions, and modest subventions requested by publishers. FHC Book Development Grants are not designated for textbooks. FHC Book Development Grants do not typically cover research costs, travel, book conferences, or publicity expenses.
Support from FHC Book Development Grant funds are limited to a maximum of $2,000 per faculty member during any 3-year period. Applications may be made at any time and are funded on a rolling basis.
For these grants the FHC requires the following: 1) mid-project report; 2) closing project reports/progress updates; 3) itemized budget expenditures as well as planned future expenses for both midway and final reports. This process helps the FHC to spotlight and share the importance of your work completed at each checkpoint. It also helps to confirm and track what has been spent from each award and budget for forthcoming expenditures tied to each award.
Applications should provide an abstract (no longer than one-two pages) of the book project. When available, applications should include a copy of a letter or contract from a publisher who makes a commitment to publish the completed work. The application should present a detailed budget and budget justification, responsibly estimating the costs to be incurred and indicating the status of the project as well as its anticipated date of publication.
The application should indicate from which other sources funds were sought and secured (such as RPG), as well as the amount that remains to be covered.
Successful grant awardees must acknowledge the Furman Humanities Center's support in the published book and will be required to provide documentation stipulating how the grant was used and to what ends. Awardees will be asked to report such details at the close of the award year. Funded projects will be featured on the Furman Humanities website.
